Happy to help in continuing time of uncertainty

With our January tax deadline out of the way for another year we were hoping to sit back, relax and take things easy… Not a chance! At Dodd & Co there is always something keeping us busy, whether that is new clients, existing clients, PR events, community work or the upcoming Budget.

As I sit here putting pen to paper several issues are running around in my head:

  • What will Philip Hammond have in store in his March Budget?
  • Milk price has improved since 12 months ago, but can it stay there?
  • Surely Scotland can’t beat England at rugby and bring England’s unbeaten run to an end?
  • When will Article 50 eventually be invoked?
  • What will Trump do next?
  • Will lamb prices improve over the next month?
  • What will the exchange rate be in 6 months time?
  • And most importantly what will win the Cheltenham Gold cup?

All of these will be answered in time – However I cannot answer the horse racing question as I am not allowed, under ICAEW rules, to give investment advice!

The last year has been a very difficult period in agriculture and whilst we hope trading conditions will improve, with so many unanswered questions above, farmers are still not quite out of the woods yet.  If it suits your current business however, there are opportunities out there for tourism and diversification schemes where there is a total of £4.3million of EAFRD funding available to support projects throughout rural Cumbria.  The three funding pots open are: –

  • Food Processing – grants to support processing initiatives, innovation, export and business growth
  • Tourism infrastructure – improving or developing new visitor attractions
  • Rural Business development – aiming to support rural business growth including farm diversification, innovation, equipment and premises improvements.

If you would like to know more about this funding or want to chat through any of the above topics please get in touch. Alternatively if you’re out and about over the next few months you will no doubt bump into the Dodd & Co farming team at events including Rickerby’s Machinery show, Borderway Dairy Expo, and then into the Summer, at all the local shows.

On the subject of local shows I write this article having retired as Cumberland show chairman after a few difficult years weather wise! However I am still involved on the show committee and we look forward to the 2017 show with great excitement as we move to a new venue at East Park (Brisco).

Dodd & Co specialise heavily in the agricultural industry and it is a large part of our business – but we do not take this for granted.  In return we put a lot back into the farming and wider community.  We sponsor and donate to local agricultural shows and events, always willing to speak to discussion groups, and host RABI functions.  In addition we sit on various committees and boards including CCF, Young Farmers, Agricultural shows and the Cumbria Farmer Network offering our voluntary advice and skills.

It is still a challenging time out there and the farming community, both individually and collectively, need help and guidance.  Here at Dodd & Co we are always happy to be there for you.
