Budget 2014 – Business Angels

Business Angels and company start-ups

Since 6 April 2012, small early-stage companies have been able to offer very significant tax savings to individuals who invest in their business, whereby in certain circumstances the individual’s investment can almost be fully underwritten via tax reliefs i.e. the investor is effectively taking no risk in making the investment in the company.  This relatively new tax relief is called SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) and we are very pleased to see that SEIS, which was originally intended to be a temporary measure lasting for only 5 years, has now become a permanent tax relief.  We have implemented this HMRC approved tax scheme for a number of our clients and it can be a real “win-win” situation for both the company and the investor in the right set of circumstances.

From the first moment we instructed Dodd & Co to act on our behalf they have provided excellent value for money in that their advice is clear, constructive, highly relevant, and pragmatic.  Alison Johnston in particular can be singled out for her engaging manner coupled with a steely determination to challenge business owners in not just their tax planning, but also their business development.  All of this is delivered with good humour and at a cost which represents excellent value.  We would have no hesitation in recommending Dodd & Co.
