Please find below the Lakeland Businesswomen's Network press release regarding this event:
It was the party of the year when almost 100 Lakeland business women and their guests celebrated Cumbrian excellence at the first Lakeland Businesswomen’s Network Award dinner at the Netherwood Hotel in Grange on 20th November. In spite of rain and flooding, women from a wide range of companies gathered to see who had won the hotly contested awards. Everyone there had a highly enjoyable evening, but five women took the prizes.
The awards were sponsored by several local and national organisations and were mostly open to any woman in Cumbria running a small business. The Growth Award, sponsored by Barclays for a business showing the most development in the year, went to May Crawford of Different Strokes Painting and Decorating. The New Business Award, sponsored by Lakeland Radio, was awarded to Jodie Currie, Maid in Carlisle. The Creativity and Innovation Award, sponsored by MTP Media for a business showing particular innovation was given to Sandra Blackburn - Pure Lake Skin Care. The Dodd&Co Inspirational Woman Award was awarded to Catherine Connor of Annabel Williams Studio. And the only award open solely to members of LBN, the YMCA Lakeside LBN Ambassadors Award, went to Hilary Claxton, who runs Beech House B&B in Kendal. The awards were also sponsored by Bluestone events, Carefree Business Solutions, Projekten, and Business Link. Thanks were also voted to the Netherwood Hotel and their staff who had really put themselves out for the LBN.
The evening was compered by Marilyn Irons from Lakeland Radio and the proceedings opened by LBN chair Jo Dix, herself an award winning jeweller, who said “We’ve probably got the largest concentration of successful, talented, innovative small businesses run by women in the country in our county. Our members are prize winners in many fields but we have realised that for some who deserve recognition there are no relevant business awards. That’s why we decided to hold this event, not only for our own members but for inventive and thriving businesses run by women across the county.” The five prize winners were presented with beautiful scrolls, created by Kendal calligrapher Terry Johnson and embellished with silver pendants by Jo Dix. After a champagne start, diners were entertained by magician Dougie and cartoonist Evsie who wandered the room, delighting and amazing everyone, and were serenaded by harpist and keyboard group The Two of Us; Yvette Price and Gila Robinson. Once the serious business of celebrating the winners was over, LBN members and their guests danced till midnight to local jazz combo Tangent fronted by Stuart Johnson and Avril Greenhow Parker.
The LBN was established several years ago by a small group of self employed women. The aim was to give women running businesses on their own the opportunity to link up with others in a similar situation, to support each other, to network or simply to socialise. Membership has grown significantly and now consists of some of the leading businesswomen in Cumbria including business developers and consultants, event organisers, designers, photographers and an agony aunt and national newspaper columnist. Membership is open to any woman running a business - for more information go to www.lbn.org.uk
