All things cloud

New Year, New Me…Blog

I should be trying to stick to my New Year’s resolution (I’ll not divulge what it is, but it’s of the same ilk as the usual ones post festive season)!

However instead I find myself reading up on things that are heading our way in 2019.  Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the one that is in the forefront of my mind, but is getting very little air time due to the B-word, yet it comes into force the day after we are supposed to be leaving the EU.

So I have decided to make it my ‘work’ New Year’s resolution to communicate some of my knowledge about all things cloud to you. So over the next 12 months I will release a monthly blog with new technologies, new government schemes, FAQs from clients and staff and any other bits of interest going on in the cloud world.

For the first instalment, let’s talk Making Tax Digital…

Initially it is affecting businesses that have a turnover greater than the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) and are VAT registered, however the rollout is only for the VAT element, so really should be named ‘Making Tax Digital for VAT’.

How does this link in with Cloud?  Well actually cloud can really help you on your way to being MTD compliant.  It is one of the easiest and most efficient ways to be ready for April 2019. Moving to the cloud brings a whole host of benefits, from saving time with automated tools, to having access to real time information about your business at the click of a button, all of which helps to make informed decisions.

The software options all have free apps that can make bookkeeping more of an on the go task rather than a Sunday afternoon job. You can invoice straight away as soon as you leave a client and finish a job, everything can be emailed and you can use payment tools to help collect your debt much easier.  You can even take pictures of purchase invoices and receipts so you are digitally recording the information.  We are finding that when a client does make the move to cloud, they only wish they had done it earlier.

Don’t just take our word for it though – click here to read about it from a client’s perspective!

If cloud isn’t an option for you, don’t worry; just contact our MTD team who will provide details of other ways in which we can help get you MTD ready.  If anyone has any queries or topics they would like me to discuss in my upcoming blogs then please email me at kristina.gash@doddaccountants.co.uk

I have known Alison Johnston for a number of years and have found her advice to be totally ‘spot on’, as is that of the rest of the ‘Dodds Team’. She is so much more than an ‘accountant’ – giving valuable advice on business planning, critiquing ideas and plans and offering the benefit of her experience. She has recently introduced us to ‘Kashflow’ – a tool which allows us to manage our own finances, from issuing invoices to calculating our VAT – invaluable! We are now working with her colleague Rob Bainbridge who has just completed our first set of accounts in our new business and who has been very patient with us and our many questions!! We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Dodd Accountants going forward.
