Budget 2014 – Business Angels

Business Angels and company start-ups

Since 6 April 2012, small early-stage companies have been able to offer very significant tax savings to individuals who invest in their business, whereby in certain circumstances the individual’s investment can almost be fully underwritten via tax reliefs i.e. the investor is effectively taking no risk in making the investment in the company.  This relatively new tax relief is called SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) and we are very pleased to see that SEIS, which was originally intended to be a temporary measure lasting for only 5 years, has now become a permanent tax relief.  We have implemented this HMRC approved tax scheme for a number of our clients and it can be a real “win-win” situation for both the company and the investor in the right set of circumstances.

We are a relatively new, and potentially high growth, start up business. Alison Johnston has provided help over the last 6 months regarding access to funding, financial recording and general support without being intrusive. She has been a good sounding board which was much needed in the early days of the business. Without the support and knowledge base provided by Alison we would in no way have been able to source private angel funding to build a technology business in one of the most rural parts of the country. Her attitude, acumen and all round manner make her an asset to any business seeking help, advice and guidance in this tough climate. I strongly recommend any business using the services that she provides and have recommended her to my network of associates on a number of occasions.
