A business owner’s guide to going on holiday

With the holiday season about to get into full swing, many of us are looking forward to a couple of weeks away in the sun to relax and unwind.

If you’re taking some time away from your business this summer then there are some things you need to consider before you pack your suitcases and head off to the sun:

Pay the wages your staff will still want to be paid whilst you’re away, so do make sure that if you are not doing this yourself, you’ve got someone reliable lined up to process the payroll whilst you’re away and make all the necessary payments and submissions.

Pay the tax man do you need to make a payment on account for your 2018/19 tax liability? This will have been calculated when your last tax return was prepared and submitted in January, and hopefully you will not get a nasty surprise when you receive a demand for payment. The deadline date for paying the payment on account is 31 July and if you have not cleared the balance by this date H M Revenue & Customs will start to charge you interest.. We’d advise you to check what (if any) payments are due before you go rather than realising when you get back and it’s too late!

Tax credits if you have a claim to either working or child Tax Credits then your household income figures relating to the 2018/19 tax year must be disclosed to H M Revenue & Customs no later than 31 July. Failure to submit can lead to the termination of your award, and so it is best to get in touch sooner rather than later. Even if the actual figures are not ready, you can provide estimates and revise them at a later date.

Cloud Accounting the glossy ads on the telly would have us all believe that nowadays, if we use one of the cloud accounting packages, we can access our accounting information whenever we want from wherever we are. Well yes that’s true, but if you try to access your accounts from certain exotic sunny locations, be aware that you may be asked by your cloud provider to verify your log in details. Be sensible about this, don’t use “public” wifi to logon to anything financially sensitive, whether that be your business or personal accounts and always use a common sense approach to computer security wherever you are. The last thing you want is for any of your financial systems to be hacked!

Once all this is sorted all you need to do is remember your passports, your tickets or boarding cards, the money (and remember to shop around for your holiday currency to make sure you get the best deal) and, of course, don’t forget your toothbrush – or your chargers!+

Have a fantastic summer whether you’re home or away.
