Grow your own culture ensures firm’s continued success

It’s 47 years since Alan McViety started out in the world of accountancy and 37 since he joined Ian Brown at Dodd & Co – a name that’s now well known throughout Cumbria and beyond for their client focussed proactive accountancy, tax and business advice.

At the end of this year Alan will be stepping back and retiring from the partnership whilst continuing in a consultancy role. At the grass roots of Dodd & Co is their “grow your own” culture, which is why, although a little sad to be leaving, Alan is happy to leave Dodd & Co in such capable hands.

“We have always believed in “growing your own” and right from the very beginning we trained our own accountants and tax advisers ensuring we always had a strong team which in turn provided a great network of knowledge. It works – the 171 staff we currently have is testament to that – Dodd & Co continues to grow and prosper! We have a great team here and everyone plays a part in contributing to the firm’s ongoing success. Although it’s the end of a very happy era, I’m not worried about leaving as I know my clients are in very capable hands and our clients’ service levels will not be compromised.

I am so very proud to have been part of Team Doddies, our approach today remains the same as it was 37 years ago – forward thinking, planning for the future – but knowing your situation today. I have loved every second of being a partner at Dodd & Co but now it’s time for a few more holidays, a bit more time for my family and my extensive list of hobbies!”

Whilst 2018 will end with one partner retiring Dodd & Co are delighted to announce that with effect from 1 January 2019 Simon Kirkbride will join the partnership – so the partner head count remains at 11.

Simon joined Dodds as a school leaver back in 2002 and completed his ATT and CTA qualifications, becoming a tax manager in 2014.

Simon will be the firm’s second tax partner and specialises in both personal and corporation tax. He has a mix of clients from trades, healthcare and everything in between.  Simon has an interest and expertise in software technology, and works on incorporating the newest ideas and features  into Dodd & Co’s systems which  in turn helps our clients to monitor their businesses more effectively and ensures that we’ll all be extremely well prepared and ready to deal with any new legislation, such as MTD (Making Tax Digital).

Simon, originally from Wigton, but now living in Lazonby with his young family says “I went to school in Wigton and joined Dodds after my A levels so becoming a partner really is an ambition fulfilled for me. Dodds has a fantastic reputation for training and I am proof as to how your career can progress with the correct guidance and support – with the right firm behind you. 70% of our Partners and Managers across the firm have worked for us for more than 10 years and we’ve created 50 new positions in a decade, increasing the size of our team by 40%.  We have a really solid team here at Penrith with some great talent; we have experts in numerous specialisms including business start ups, farming, healthcare, tourism and general practice.  Our clients tell us they want knowledge, communication and personality from their accountant – something we have bags of at Dodds and I’m really pleased to be part of this successful business and great Cumbrian employer”.

So – it’s celebrations all around for #TeamDoddies saying a happy goodbye to Alan and celebrating Simon’s success.
