Taxing Times – February 2019

Well, it’s over! Self assessment time has been and gone yet again, and what a tough time it was (as ever).  At the start of January, HMRC issued a statement saying that over 5.5 million taxpayers still had to file their returns.  By 28th January our own tax department still had some 8% of tax returns still to go – that is 480 returns still outstanding. Out of the 480, the information to complete one third of them was not even in the building.  However, compared to the nation as a whole, as, in only the previous week, it was estimated that 48% of taxpayers had not yet filed their returns, that was not at all bad going!

A record 10.1 million people nationwide filed online this year.  The peak hour for filing was 4pm to 5pm when 60,000 filed their returns. Adrenalin was high and it was all systems go. Computer keyboards were pounded, information was transmitted, HMRC’s gateway kept up with demand and come close of play on 31st, all was finished! Calm has returned and now we can all look forward to Spring.
