What’s new in the world of tax?

Christmas time, mistletoe and…tax returns?

HMRC figures show that a record 3,003 tax returns were completed on Christmas Day, marking a 15% increase on Christmas Day 2018’s figure of 2,616. The number of self-assessment forms submitted on Boxing Day was up 9% on a year ago, with 9,254 completed on December 26.

Some people will do anything to get a break from the family!

Jungle exploits help pay tax bill

Actor Cliff Parisi says that his accountant showing him his tax bill prompted his decision to sign up to appear on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here. The former EastEnders star said: “What made me sign up? The taxman!”

Sheeran pays £4.5m in tax

Ed Sheeran was paying £12,328 a day in tax. The singer recorded profit of £23.7m.

HMRC warns over service sites

A number of people are falling victim to websites designed to look like official Government pages that charge for services which are usually free or far cheaper. Among these are sites offering fast-track processing of applications for National Insurance numbers, despite HMRC saying such a facility does not exist, with its free route the fastest option (see this month’s article on checking your NI number).
